Our topic for this half term is 'Brilliant Bodies'.

Learning overview

This half term we will be learning all about the human body. We will find out what humans need to survive and how we change and grow. We will be learning about the five senses and devising investigations to test them. We will make careful, observational sketches of bones and animal skeletons.

We will also be continuing with our long-term study of the weather and plant life in our school and how this changes through the seasons.

Thinking skills

We will be continuing to develop our work on Edward de Bono’s ‘Thinking Hats’ to help children improve their inter-personal skills and higher order thinking skills.

Christian Value (Covered in Acts of Worship and in class): Hope

Christians see their hope in God’s promise ‘that love and goodness have, and will ultimately, overcome all evil.’ 

Core Curriculum Targets

Reading target:

• To check that their reading makes sense.

• Answer questions on the basis of what is being said or done.

• Make links between books they are reading and those they have read

Writing target:

• To write consistently in the correct tense.

• To identify different types of sentence.

• To punctuate different types of sentence correctly.

Maths target:

• To identify ¼, ½, ¾, 2/4 and 1/3.

• Recall and use multiplication and division facts for 2, 3, 5 and 10.

• Recognise the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction. 

RE - ‘Special Places’

We will be considering the concept of Special Places and why particular places are important to different groups of people.

PSHE - My Body is Important

Children will appreciate and celebrate differences and similarities between themselves and others. They will consider different ways to keep themselves fit and healthy.


By the end of the unit the children should be able to describe what humans need to survive and how they grow and change. They will be able to name the main parts of the body and describe the five senses. They should be able to consider which materials will be best suited to making a model based on their properties and should be able to devise ways of making it move.
