welcome to herons class

Welcome back to another action packed year at Longparish Primary School. I hope you all had a restful and event filled summer. This letter is to give you an indication of the areas of learning that we will be covering in Heron Class this term and to clarify arrangements for homework.

This term the children will be looking at topics on Plants, My Family, the locality of the school, Remembrance Day and Pulleys and Levers. Each topic will have a key curricular focus (e.g. Science) but will draw in other curricular areas in order to support the children’s learning.

There is no fixed day for the return of reading scheme books, these will be changed on request. The children will be instructed to place their book in the purple tray when it needs changing. Library books will be provided by the library van once a month.

Some children in the class will be taking home word sheets with pictures including the words that they need to learn to read. Please help your child to recognise and recall these words. When they are secure with each word they may colour it in on the sheet and when they have completed the whole sheet they may return it to school for a reward and a copy of the following sheet. This will help your child to extend and secure their sight vocabulary.

A set of spellings appropriate to your child’s ability will be sent home each Friday, in a red spelling book. These should be practised each day for five days. The recommended approach to the learning of spellings used in school is known as ‘Look, Cover, Write, Check’. Quite simply the child looks at the word, covers it up, writes it down and then checks to see if it is correct. The spellings that your child takes home will also be practised in class each morning before the register is taken. A spelling test will take place each Friday.

I will be holding a ‘Meet the Teacher’ session straight after school on Tuesday 13th September for any parents who would like to come and find out more about life in Heron Class.

If you have any questions you would like to ask me about any of the above, please do not hesitate to come and see me. You are always more than welcome.

 Mr Foggo
