welcome to chaffinch class

Our topic for this half term (Summer 2016) is 'Onwards and Upwards'

Learning overview

During this term, Chaffinch will complete a series of mini topics.

• The first is “The Black Hole” and is a literacy based topic. It is based on an animation clip that challenges the children’s thinking and provokes discussion. The children will explore the story and produce a collection of writing in different genres.

• The second mini topic is history based and focuses on the legacies left by the Ancient Greeks, for example democracy, architecture, maths and science. Children will plan and carry out historical enquiries to learn about this era of history.

• The third topic is geography and science based and will ask children to consider the issue of a new housing development within Longparish. Children will consider the human and environmental impact by looking at both the positive and negative consequences.

• In addition to these mini topics, pupils will be learning a range of songs with teachers from Hampshire Music Service and Pilgrims’ School in order to prepare for a large concert, which will be held at Winchester Cathedral.

Thinking skills

Children will be using the techniques of “Mind mapping” and P4C to explore a range of subjects, by learning to consider different aspects of an issue and making links between their ideas.

Christian Value (Covered in Acts of Worship and in class): Hope

Christians see their hope in God’s promise ‘that love and goodness have, and will ultimately, overcome all evil’. This hope is manifested in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Pupils will be studying: newspaper reports; narrative stories, including diary entries and myths; persuasive texts, including advertisements; explanations.

During each week, pupils will also have a guided reading session with an adult, as well as focused sessions on spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Pupils will be focusing on: data handling, volume and capacity, weight and lengths as well as continuing to develop skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

Pupils will be exploring the concept of ritual and temptation in a range of faiths including Judaism and Catholicism. Pupils will be encouraged to reflect on rituals they undertake within their own lives and consider how they personally respond to temptation.

During this term we will be looking at citizenship within our communities. The children will also consider the changes that they face at the start of a new school year, especially when moving on to secondary school.

By the end of the unit your child will have written a collection of texts about the “Black Hole” and designed a new housing estate.

You will be invited to see the results of the project towards the end of term.

Many thanks for your continued support.

Miss Taylor
